Congenital hereditary vertical nystagmus.

چکیده
Duke-Elder (1949) states that congenital nystagmus varies considerably in extent, direction, and rapidity of the movements. In most cases it affects both eyes equally, but in a few instances it is uniocular. Typically the movements are pendular in type, horizontal in direction, and do not alter on lateral deviation, although they may then become jerky in type. Sometimes the movement is coarser to one side than the other, in which case the head is habitually turned to place the eyes in the position at which the nystagnus is least. In 1911, Nettleship reviewed nine pedigrees of congenital hereditary nystagmus and to this he added four more which he had examined personally. Hemmes (1926) published a pedigree and reviewed all published pedigrees up to 1924, 38 in all. Since then Yawger (1917), Cox (1936), Glover (1937), Waggoner and Boyd (1942), and Rucker (1946) have added their contributions. A careful study of the published reports has shown, with two exceptions, that the nystagmus has been bilateral and horizontal in all cases. Posey (1902) described a native boy, aged 8 years, who had bilateral vertical nystagmus. The time of onset was not known, but oscillations of the head, of a rotary type, began at 5 years. Three siblings were normal and There was no family history of abnormal eye movements. Walsh (1947) states that the nystagmus is usually horizontal, although torsional nystagnus has been observed by Ohm (1938). It would appear, therefore, that congenital nystagmus of the vertical type is rare. This condition is of great interest to the geneticist and it is for this reason that these cases are recorded. The family described here is of pure Italian extraction and the nystagmus involves five cases spread over three generations; three males and two females. The diagrammatic pedigree is set out in the Appendix. Twelve members of the family have been examined and their blood groups and eye colours, etc., are recorded also in the Appendix. There is no known consanguinity in -he matings. Case Reports

Vertical or asymmetric nystagmus need not imply neurological disease.
AIM To indicate that congenital idiopathic nystagmus (CIN) and sensory defect nystagmus (SDN) can be vertical or asymmetric in some children. METHODS Of 276 children presenting with nystagmus for electrophysiological testing, 14 were identified as having CIN or SDN, yet had a nystagmus which was either vertical (n=11) or horizontal asymmetric (n=3). Flash electroretinograms and flash and patt...
متن کاملInterrelations between measures of visual acuity and parameters of eye movement in congenital nystagmus.
The authors assessed relationships between visual acuity and the amplitude, frequency, intensity, and duration of foveation periods in a retrospective study of 32 patients. Twenty-four patients had congenital idiopathic nystagmus, and eight patients had nystagmus and albinism. Visual acuity was determined for Landolt ring optotypes and, as the extrapolated high-frequency cutoff of the contrast ...
متن کاملThe torsional component of "horizontal" congenital nystagmus.
OBJECTIVES To study the relationship between the major horizontal and minor torsional components of congenital nystagmus to elucidate the diagnostic importance, effects on vision, and pathogenetic implications of the torsional components. METHODS We recorded the eye movements of 13 subjects with congenital nystagmus using a three-dimensional magnetic search coil technique over a 15-year perio...

Pearls c Eye movement abnormalities can be helpful with topical localization. c Vertical nystagmus (downbeat and upbeat nystagmus) is typically caused by posterior fossa lesions. Other causes include medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies, inflammatory and autoimmune/paraneoplastic conditions, and hereditary and degenerative cerebellar ataxias. c Lesions in the posterior fossa such as me...
متن کاملNystagmus characteristics in congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB).
AIM To analyse nystagmus characteristics in patients with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) for differentiation from other forms of early childhood nystagmus. METHODS Horizontal and vertical eye movements of 10 patients (6-46 years, mean 17.1 years, median 12.5 years) with CSNB (eight with CSNB1, two with CSNB2) were recorded with the scleral magnetic search coil technique or by el...
